Ridge Workday 22nd October 2005
Time to add a bit of colour and interest to the Community Garden
with some spring flowers. Around 400 daffodils and crocuses were
purchased and Mike, Maureen and Elisabeth set about planting them
all in selected areas.
So, don't forget to look out for these in the New Year, it should
be a grand display!
In the meantime, Lee set about clearing a bit more around the
plinth where our grand mosaic was to be finally released upon
the world.
Composed of small broken fragments of coloured tiles, the mosaic
features an apple tree and represents the Ridge in a colourful
way. Our deep thanks to the local Girl Guides who spent their
time creating it.
Joined by the rest of the team, a collective effort ensued in
mixing up the bedding cement and carefully laying the mosaic on
top.
It was a tense moment for all, as none of us had seen the mosaic
as it was put together face-down on an adhesive-layered sheet!
Soaking the sheet had us all eagerly peeling away the paper and
adhesive to reveal the final picture you see here. Complete success!
The final steps involved sealing the edges and 'grouting' in
all the pieces. This exercise was not without its tension too
as the cement was quick-setting! We managed it just in time as
the cement was getting somewhat stiff by the time we smoothed
over the last pieces.
We all felt this was truly a very worthwhile exercise giving
us an attractive, lasting piece to surprise many a walker as they
pass along the path. Please take time to search it out when you
are next in the area, we're sure you'll enjoy the visit and you
can take in the rest of the Ridge too.
